ABOUT TEACH YOGA

Since 2001, we have helped over 500 people to turn their passion in to their career and allow their true potential to unfold. Teach Yoga was originally founded by Elena Voyce, a pioneer of therapeutic yoga in the UK and well known for her unique system that combines ancient wisdom with the principles of rehabilitation and modern science, making it one of the safest, transformational methods available.

At Teach Yoga, we stay rooted in the ethical principles of yoga which form the foundations of our teaching. We offer a modernised approach to teaching which motivates students and facilitates their accessible and, safe, healthy yoga journey.

Our class sizes are kept small in line with our ethos to maximise connection, support and attention to each individual.

This course is led by Sector Director, Suzan Altay, who qualified with Elena over a decade ago after changing her career from academia.

Suzan is now a very successful, full time teacher who has taught extensively in London and runs international retreats.

As the Principle Tutor on the course, Suzan is joined by a team of other supporting tutors who are experts in their own fields of asana, pranayama, meditation, anatomy and philosophy, who collectively have over 100 years of combined teaching experience both in the UK and internationally. Senior course tutors include published author, Swami Saradananda and Elena herself.

The investment you make in your teacher training will not leave you with just a paper certificate. It is an investment into making true progress with your own yoga journey; physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. You will open up new opportunities for yourself, both on and off the mat through taking a course that is designed to give you the practical tools and experience necessary to prepare you for a long teaching career.

This course is not for the most flexible, or those with the most physical strength, it’s for anyone who wishes to take the time to understand them-selves, from a cellular level.

Through a very detailed approach, we are able to connect to the smallest of muscles, access deeper into our own body through breath and awareness, whilst experiencing a deeper connection to our own being. From the space we are able to create internally, we can then take the time to expand outwards.

The course is based around Elena’s SASSY principles: Soften, Align, Strengthen, Yield.

By the end of the course not only will you be able to apply the benefits of these principles to yourself, but you will be ready to share the principles with others. Empowering yourself to empower others to live a life in physical and emotional balance. This is yoga.

 

SUMMARY

Teach Yoga was established in 2001 by Elena Voyce, and since then, has taught over 500 people to become yoga teachers.

Suzan Altay – your, principle tutor, has been teaching yoga for over 10 years, both in the UK and internationally. Suzan will be joined by other expert tutors, such as Swami Saradananda, a published author on yoga philosophy and Lisa Price, who is currently working with the British Rugby 7’s team and British Fencing to integrate yoga into their athletic training programmes to enhance performance.

A new ‘hybrid’ yoga course, where the majority of the course will be taught by Suzan online and in studio, and with some modules streamed live by other members of the teaching team, to keep and watch, whenever you want to in the future, the sessions will be recorded for you.

Build upon a solid foundation of; Technique Labs, Posture Labs, Practicums, Anatomy, Physiology and the Principles of Fitness, Yoga Philosophy, Homework Assignments and Personal Practice, Electives, Preparations for Teaching and a Final Assessment.

With a unique approach to teaching that has been developed by Elena over the last 30 years, based on: Softening, Aligning, Strengthening, Stretching and Yielding (SASSY).

The Yoga Alliance certificate is recognised globally and will allow you to teach both in the UK and internationally.

 

COURSE OVERVIEW

With its modern application of the ancient wisdom of Yoga over a period of 5 months, this course will help you to develop the self-belief so that you can confidently and safely develop your own unique teaching style.

The course equips students with the necessary skills and knowledge to teach Hatha Yoga proficiently, professionally, safely and clearly to healthy adults and to design and deliver an appropriate, safe and effective programme of lessons to a variety of clients (as either individuals or as groups clients in a class).

Our Course Is Built On The Following Foundations.

Technique Labs: These aim to deepen the student’s understanding of postures in their own personal practice and help develop body awareness. They are a fundamental part of the teaching as our inspiration comes from what we know and have experienced. Students should support the Technique Labs through the attendance of regular classes, & wherever possible with the course teachers.

Posture Labs: These provide a deeper focus on each posture, drawing out key teaching points, the benefits, contraindications and anatomical movements, together with suggested preparatory and subsequent postures.

Practicum: These sessions are where students begin to teach in small groups, to develop their experience and confidence

Anatomy, Physiology and Principles of Fitness: These lectures provide students with clear and precise information via presentations and an interactive learning environment.

Yoga Philosophy: The Course provides space and guidance for students to open and deepen their inquiries into this expansive area, focusing on such important texts as the Yoga Sutras, the Bhagavad-Gita, the Upanishads and the Hatha Yoga Pradipika.

Homework Assignments and Personal Practice: The Course requires Students to set aside approximately 2-3 hours a week for written work and further reading, together with at least two self-practice sessions, to review & practice postures & ideas learned on the course.

Electives: Each student is asked to prepare an independent research project related to yoga and any other topic of personal interest.

Preparations for Teaching: These sessions cover such topics as Health and Safety in the Classroom, the Structuring of Classes, etc.

Final Assessment: The teaching of a class in the presence of an external assessor.

From the onset, course tutors keep in focus the importance of physical and emotional anatomical precision to ensure that trainees are fully prepared to teach Yoga safely and effectively so that their Yoga journey, together with that or their students’, is healthy as well as transformational.

Our approach to Yoga contains the seeds of Ahimsa (non-violence), Satya (Truth) and Karuna (Compassion) – Key ethical suggestions as espoused by Patanjali. This informs both the way that we teach our own students as well as our trainee teachers.

 

THE SASSY METHOD

Physical Yoga Asanas are taught following the SASSY Method, devised by Elena Voyce.

SASSY stands for Soften, Align, Strengthen, Stretch, Yield.

S: Soften: Softening and releasing, centering and breath awareness, integrating body and mind and softening blockages, barriers and scar tissue.

A: Align: 360-degree body alignment with the use of props where necessary, promoting healthy joints.

S: Strengthen: Strengthening involves the functional and effective use of an aligned body to strengthen muscles in a harmonised and balanced way.

S: Stretch: Stretching or lengthening muscles safely to bring precise flexibility to muscles without upsetting the vulnerable joints.

Y: Yield: Yielding is about finding ground and foundation. There are many meanings of the word yielding. For us, it is being grounded and supported by nature and being in union with our real Self. It is yoga union as we see it.

SASSY is a teaching methodology that Elena Voyce has developed through thirty years of teaching embodied, mindful and conscious movement.

SASSY is based on scientific principles and is also influenced by Pilates, Feldenkrais and the Alexander Technique as Elena and Suzan are also Pilates teachers.

SASSY helps to bring the speed of the mind and the speed of the body into the same room. When the body is released and aligned properly, you feel more energised and connected.

Strengthening is fundamental on many levels but those who think that they have done a lot of exercise, may have over developed one particular muscle group. Strengthening through the SASSY method cultivates harmonious strength for the whole body and strengthens weaker muscles that can often be overlooked.

Stretching or lengthening muscles, is only effective when it comes after preparing the body through softening, aligning and strengthening.

It is very easy for people to over stretch, and to keep over stretching the same muscles when stretching is not approached correctly. Stretching the body in a misaligned way does not provide any stability for the body and is not beneficial later on in life. SASSY promotes a safe approach to stretching.

 

A HYBRID COURSE – A PERFECT BALANCE

Our hybrid course takes the best aspects of live-online training and face to face training in the studio to give you a fully comprehensive, balanced learning experience.

Lectures are taught online meaning that you attend live, engaging sessions from the comfort of your own home. There is no commuting, traffic or travel expenses. You are able to learn from a calm space.

Visual presentations accompany lectures and you will a receive a detailed and comprehensive training manual that covers everything you have learnt in the sessions.

Recordings are also available, enabling you to revisit and review content in your own time so that you can process information at your own pace and catch up if necessary.

You are also given 3, 30-minute question and answer sessions directly with the Philosophy, Anatomy and Physiology tutors providing personal mentoring at no extra cost.

Homework assignments are completed in your own time at your own pace. We set deadlines as guidelines, but you are able to manage and balance your own workload with your other responsibilities.

Practical sessions with Suzan take place in a beautiful, centrally located, fully equipped studio. Taking lectures through real time training means that the time spent in person can be more focused on your own personal development and teaching practice. There is plenty of time for in depth discussion and questions relating your practice and teaching as you are not trying to cover everything at the same time.

In person training also provides the space for you to meet and bond with your fellow teacher trainees.

 

ABOUT SUZAN ALTAY

Suzan Altay is a sound engineer turned Senior Yoga Teacher. She trained with Elena Voyce in 2009 and since then she has been teaching Hatha Yoga, Vinyasa Yoga, Yin Yoga, Prenatal Yoga, Pilates and Meditation in various prestigious gyms as class instructor and Yoga Personal Trainer. She also runs world-wide retreats and teaches privately.

She grew up in Cyprus with little sports/activities. When she discovered the benefits of Yoga 20 years ago, she knew she had to make some changes in her life. Yoga is now her biggest passion.

“My greatest idol was my grandfather. He was a teacher, headmaster in the 1930’s -70’s. His stories are still in my mind. How he was helping poor villagers’ kids to go to school for free. And in return, to show their gratitude, how the parents were giving my grandpa chickens they raised…They had no money, but their appreciation lasted until the day my grandpa passed away. Every International Teacher’s Day, every Father’s Day, he was being showered with flowers and cards… He lived to give. I want to follow my grandpa’s steps. To give, to help change lives and open doors for the better. Teach Yoga and Elena gave me what I needed to strive. So, it gives me great pleasure to work with her aiming to do the same for our teacher training students. Her energy, her love, her support, her knowledge and her attention to detail is admirable.
